So, in 1889, Washington Martin invented what we now know as the padlock. Before then, in order to secure something, you had (which was the best technology wasn't a time) was the Chinese bolt. Which, if you use tools, you understand it's basically nothing more than a nut and a bolt. Just about anybody had access to your stuff.
So in order to secure your premises you literally needed to hire someone to walk around and keep the place secure. When Washington Martin invented this padlock, what happened was, now you can actually use the key, which means only you had access to this one place you want to secure. Now you can actually leave it alone you didn't have to hire someone and, thus, changing the way we build houses, what we keep it our house, what we keep in our garage, and everything else.
